29/08/2003 (Agence Europe) - Graham Watson, President of the Liberal Group at the European Parliament, is delighted that the British electoral committee has announced that citizens of Gibraltar can vote (for the first time) in the European elections of June 2004, in the South-West constituency. If I am re-elected, noted the British Liberal Democrat, I will do my utmost to defend Gibraltar's interests and will cooperate closely with Gibraltar's Liberal Party. Spain opposed the 8 May 2003 law passed by the UK whereby Gibraltar is seen as a UK constituency. Madrid argues this contravenes EU law and the 1976 British law on European elections, which only applies to the UK. The European Commission indicated at the end of July that it will be examining the issue in the next three months (see Europe of 1 August, p.2).
