Javier Solana in Iran and Middle East

Brussels, 29/08/2003 (Agence Europe) - Javier Solana, the EU's High Representative for CFSP, has been in Iran since Friday on a two-day visit during which he is to meet the Iranian government for discussion on relations between the EU and Iran - and also above all on the nuclear issue - as well as on the situation in Iraq and the Middle East (EUROPE of 23 July, p.5). Mr Solana will then go on to the Middle East for a four-day visit which will take him to Israel, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. The aim of the High Representative is to work with the main actors in the region on rebuilding a positive climate for the Peace Process on the basis of the Quartet's "roadmap", and to reaffirm the EU's commitment in favour of this process. We recall that the Italian Presidency has pointed out that it hopes to have a ministerial meeting of the Quartet held for the Middle East, if possible in September (EUROPE of 29 August, p.2).
