02/04/2002 (Agence Europe) - Some associations like Greenpeace -Friends of the Earth-Europe and the European Environmental Bureau- have called on the EU to face up to the dangers that GMOs will present for European agriculture and biodiversity. Their plea came after the publication of a report by the European Environmental Agency (EEA), which recommends that genetically modified crops of rape, maize and beet should be kept at greater distances to allow isolation from non-GMO crops. These NGOs call on the EU to ban these GMO crops and to undertake action to suspend the authorisations that have already been issued. The report called "Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs): the significance of gene flow through pollen transfer" (available online at: http://www.eea.eu.int ) is also in favour of generalised use of "plant barriers", intended to absorb the pollen transported outside the areas where genetically engineered crops are grown.
