02/04/2001 (Agence Europe) - The financial volume of regional aid will no longer be the same after EU enlargement, and Sicily must today seize the opportunities provided by Europe, warned Konstantinos Hatzidakis (EPP/ED Greece), Chair of the European Parliament's Committee on Transport and Regional Policy. During a visit to Sicily with a dozen MEPs to gather information on the island's infrastructure projects, K. Hatzidakis was mainly informed of the plan to build a bridge between Sicily and continental Italy. According to an EP press release, he stressed it would be up to Sicily, in particular, and Italy, in general, to decide whether or not to build the bridge over the Stretto. It should at any rate respect the principles of the European environment and transport policies.
