EXTERNAL ACTION / (ae) turkey

23/01/2014 (Agence Europe) - Füle/Cavusoglu meeting. On 22 January, following the meetings between European Commission President José Manuel Barroso, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Füle and Turkey's European Affairs Minister Mevlut Cavusologlu discussed the comments from the European Commission on Turkey's draft laws. Füle reiterated that the draft law on the judiciary still needs to be brought into line with European standards, and he reaffirmed the need to continue investigations into corruption allegations - investigations that must be conducted in full independence and impartiality. Füle “took good note” of the assurances provided by Cavusoglu that Ankara would continue the dialogue on the EU's concerns. Füle and Cavusoglu also discussed the outlook for progress in EU-Turkey relations in 2014. (CG/transl.fl)
