03/07/2012 (Agence Europe) - Van Nuffel appointed Barroso's representative to UN Good Offices Mission. On Monday 2 July, European Commission President José Manuel Barroso appointed Pieter Van Nuffel as his new Personal Representative to the Good Offices Mission of the United Nations in Cyprus, the goal of which is to resolve the conflict between Greek and Turkish Cypriots over the division of their island. Van Nuffel, currently a legal advisor in the Commission's legal department, succeeds Jorge César das Neves who has held the post since July 2011. Van Nuffel will provide legal advice to the UN Good Offices Mission on EU-related matters and act as liaison between the UN Mission and the Commission. This appointment “demonstrates the continued commitment of President Barroso and the European Commission to supporting the Cyprus settlement process and assisting the United Nations”, says a Commission press release.
