Brussels, 03/07/2012 (Agence Europe) - EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton “warmly” congratulated Enrique Peña Nieto, on 2 July, on his election as President of Mexico and also the Mexican people for turning out in high numbers to vote in an election which passed off peacefully.
Ashton said that she “trusts that under Mr. Peña Nieto's leadership the excellent relations we have built with Mexico over the years will not only continue but will be further strengthened”. She said that the European Union is committed to a strong partnership with Mexico on the basis of shared values and interests as strategic partners on the global stage, and in the context of the successful Global Agreement. The EU, she went on, will continue to support Mexico so it seizes the opportunities and faces the challenges ahead.
Peña Nieto of the Centre-Left Institutional Revolutionary Party was elected for a six-year term of office on 1 July, with almost 38% of votes cast, ahead of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who belongs to the Left-wing Party of the Democratic Revolution, (32%) and Josefina Vazquez, representing the Right-wing party of outgoing President Felipe Calderon, the National Action Party, (26%).
