03/07/2012 (Agence Europe) - Swoboda backs resumption of discussions. On Tuesday 3 July, Hannes Swoboda, leader of the S&D Group in the European Parliament, said that, despite the dispute over the name between the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) and Greece, “negotiations (with FYROM) should take place and should look at everything else”. “We know full well that neither side has done what it was supposed to”, he added. Even though Greece has its problems, “it is high time for discussions to be resumed”, he stated, going on to say that, if the economic situation in Greece improves next year, the Commission and the Council should try to get discussions underway again, to bring the parties around the table. “The EU cannot accept that this dispute beds in and prevents negotiations with FYROM”¸ he added.
