Brussels, 03/07/2012 (Agence Europe) - Two NGOs active in the asylum field, PRO ASYL from Germany and the Greek Refugee Council, accused Italy on 3 July, in a report, of systematically repatriating to Greece migrants arriving in Italian ports, without giving the migrants' situation preliminary examination. The two associations had listened to the cases of 50 people experiencing this situation. The NGos particularly deplore the fact that Italy had officially indicated that it was no longer applying the Dublin II Regulation and had said that it was not transferring asylum seekers to Greece (following the ECHR ruling against Greece in January 2011), although it was in practice violating this law and proceeding to “mass readmissions” of asylum seekers to Greece. The two NGOs criticise the Italian authorities for having failed to meet elementary standards regarding international protection and having failed to carry out any interview of people arriving on Italian shores. They also found Italy guilty of ill-treatment of migrants. The Italian authorities failed to make any distinction between adults and children, even if the latter were unaccompanied, and the authorities gave them the same treatment as adults, according to the NGOs. The NGOs highlight the inadequate reception conditions for asylum seekers in Greece and point out that Italy has completely violated European law, particularly the Charter of fundamental rights and the United Nations Convention on Children's Rights.
