Brussels, 04/09/2009 (Agence Europe) - At least one month from the Irish referendum on the Lisbon Treaty (2 October), the “yes” camp seems to be losing ground. The results of a poll published in the Irish Times on 3 September show that only 46% of respondents intend to turn out to vote in favour of the new treaty (-8% compared to the last poll in May) and that 29% (+1%) intend to reject it. The number of undecided has increased considerably (+7%) compared to May, to reach 25% of respondents today. Given these figures, Irish Foreign Minister Micheál Martin had to acknowledge that it will be “difficult” to win the referendum although it was still a possibility. “There is a very significant challenge ahead. It's going to be a very tight campaign and it will demand all of the resources, conviction, politics and passion of all of those on the 'yes' side”, Mr Martin commented in the Irish press.
