ECB has strategy for addressing crisis

Brussels, 04/09/2009 (Agence Europe) - The ECB has a strategy for overcoming the effect of the crisis and will implement it when the time is ripe. This was explained by ECB President Jean-Claude Trichet, who gave details of the elements that the institution in Frankfurt will take into account to bring to an end the non-standard credit support measures that it has taken since the beginning of the economic and financial crisis. “We at the ECB designed the non-standard measures with our exit strategy in mind, and we are ready to implement this strategy when the appropriate time comes”, Trichet writes in a column of The Financial Times on Friday 4 September. But the time is not yet ripe. “It would be premature to say that the financial crisis is over” and it is not yet time to begin this exit strategy, he continued. If these exceptional measures present risks for price stability, “we will immediately begin to unwind them”, Trichet points out, saying that the timing of this sequence will depend on the real time analysis of the economic and monetary situation carried out by the ECB. Measures without impact on inflation may remain in place longer and there is no “predetermined sequence between interest rate changes and the unwinding of non-standard measures”, he said on Friday addressing a conference in Frankfurt. Thus, in his view, “the Governing Council may determine how interest rate decisions may blend with the unwinding of non-standard measures”. (A.B./transl.jl)
