Immigration is “threat for democracy” in Greece

Brussels, 03/07/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 2 July, Immigration Commissioner Jacques Barrot warned against the risk of democracy being thrown off balance in Greece due to the large inflow of migrants from Turkish shores. “There is a major risk of democracy being thrown off balance in Greece because of uncontrolled migration”, he said during a press conference in Brussels. Mr Barrot, who was in Greece at the end of June, had on that occasion called on Turkey to combat illegal immigration channels (EUROPE 9932 and 9933). “Turkey must help to fight traffickers who encourage risky departures”, he repeated on Thursday. “We cannot stand by without doing anything. We must have stricter talks with Turkey”, which is a candidate country for EU accession, Mr Barrot stressed. Such talks must be on the re-entry agreement and allow better monitoring of departures of migrants in an unlawful situation from the Turkish coast, he explained. He went on to underline, however, that “we can also help Turkey via re-entry agreements with Pakistan and with other Asian countries”, from which many of the people seeking immigration into the EU come. The commissioner announced his intention to put back on the discussion table the principle of solidarity with southern EU countries, during the informal meeting of interior and justice ministers on 16-17 July in Stockholm.
