Brussels, 03/07/2009 (Agence Europe) - “In response to the gravity of the current situation (in Honduras), the ambassador of the local EU Presidency has been recalled for consultations. All other EU ambassadors have also left the country,” stated the Swedish Presidency in a statement issued on behalf of the EU27 in the evening of Thursday 2 July 2009. The ambassadors of Germany, Spain, France and Italy have been recalled. The Swedish Presidency expressed firm support of the work of the secretary general of the Organisation of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, who is expected to arrive in Honduras on Friday 3 July. The deposed Honduras president, Manuel Zelaya, has announced he will not be returning to the country. The EU Council's Policy and Security Committee on Friday did not discuss the Honduras issue but may do so on Tuesday, depending on how events pan out on the ground, explained a diplomat. The statement comments: “The EU underlines the importance of the resumption of the negotiations of an Association Agreement between the European Union and Central America when the constitutional order of Honduras has been restored.” The Association Agreement talks scheduled to take place in Brussels next week will not now go ahead.
