Brussels, 03/07/2009 (Agence Europe) - The Swedish Presidency is no longer calling for the European Parliament to vote later this month on whether to appoint José Manuel Barroso as the president of the new European Commission. After a meeting with the French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, in Stockholm on 3 July 2009, the Swedish prime minister, Fredrik Reinfeldt, said that a decision would not be taken about Barroso this month but he hoped the decision would be taken at a later date. Reinfeldt, who is the acting president of the European Council, said the European Parliament's independence had to be respected and the fact that the majority of MEPs appear to oppose a vote in July. Nicolas Sarkozy hinted that the vote might take place in September, commenting that it was not so important it was 15 July or 15 September but what was an issue was that the Council and the EP should not disagree with each other.
