EU wants talks to resume on nuclear programme as quickly as possible but condemns repression of protests

Brussels, 29/06/2009 (Agence Europe) - Talks between the international community and Iran on the Iranian nuclear programme should resume in the near future despite political unrest following the recent presidential elections, says Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the CFSP. “We would like to soon have the possibility of resuming multilateral discussions with Iran on its nuclear policy”, Javier Solana told the press this weekend in Corfu, where he was attending a ministerial meeting of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). When asked about the protests against the election results, Solana stressed he did not wish to “interfere in an internal Iranian matter” but nonetheless condemned the way the Iranian authorities had taken repressive action against demonstrations after the elections. Carl Bildt, Sweden's Foreign Minister, who will be presiding over the EU Council as of Wednesday 1 July, was less diplomatic. “The Iranian regime is obviously seeking to maintain its position though very tough repression. It cannot, however, hide the fact that the regime is now weaker. It has lost its legitimacy both internally and externally”, he said. EU foreign ministers, who were all in Corfu on Sunday, also called for the immediate release of several Iranian employees of the United Kingdom Embassy in Teheran as well as that of a Greek journalist, all of whom were arrested by the Iranian authorities for their alleged involvement in the protest movement in Iran. “The EU urges Iran and its authorities to cease the hostilities towards EU member states and against EU partner countries and their nationals”, said the Czech minister, Jan Kohout, who is currently president of the EU Council. On Monday 29 June, at least five of the nine British Embassy employees were released.
