29/06/2009 (Agence Europe) - Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini called on the European Union, on Saturday 27 June, to grant visas to Iranians fleeing repression. “Italy has shown solidarity at national level but that is not enough. We need Europe”, he said in Trieste during the G8 meeting which brought together the foreign ministers of the 8 most industrialised countries (United States, Canada, France, Italy, Germany, United Kingdom, Japan and Russia). “We must speak with a single voice when requests like this are put to us” by one of the EU countries, he said. At this stage, the Italian consulate in Teheran is said to have granted 25 visas to Iranians fleeing the violence. (B.C./transl.jl)
