Brussels, 29/06/2009 (Agence Europe) - A conference organised in Brussels on Friday 26 June by the European Women's Lobby (EWL) on “No modern European democracy without equality between men and women” focussed on the recent European election results and discussed the top jobs at the EU, women's representation at the new European Commission, the prospect of a woman as a future president of the European Parliament and women as chairs of EP committees, and the outcome of the EWL's 50-50 campaign. Margot Wallström, Vice-President of the European Commission, said at the conference that the EP elections were behind us but the work has not yet done. How come quotas are applied in the EU for fishing but not to support women in politics? She said that only strong action would remedy the situation. The EWL president, Brigitte Triems, called for every EU member state to put forward one man and one woman as candidates for their European commissioner. Rodi Kratsa, outgoing Vice-President of the EP, said that a Europe based on the values of democracy and justice had to reflect the fact that half the EU's population are women. Parity between men and women in the decision-making process is as much a question of democracy as a moral duty for all. (G.B./transl.fl)
