28/05/2009 (Agence Europe) - Irishman John Bruton, who heads the European Commission Delegation to Washington, has expressed his optimism that his fellow countrymen will approve the Lisbon Treaty in the second referendum expected in September/October. Speaking at a conference organised by the EPP in Brussels on 27 May, he said he thought that the Irish were “entitled to take a second look on the treaty to see whether they had taken the right decision” in the first referendum in June 2008. The Irish government had, he said, shown itself to be “wise” in consulting its citizens for a second time on the treaty, “because of the enormous importance the decision has for all of Europe,” he said.
