Brussels, 28/05/2009 (Agence Europe) - With ten days to go before the European elections, the Commission under José Manuel Barroso has drawn up a particularly glowing report of its 2004-2009 mandate which, it states, “delivered real benefits for citizens across Europe”. In a report available in all EU languages (http: //ec.europa.eu/index_en.htm), the Commission boasts of having been at the root of the energy/climate package, of having promoted energy supply security and of having taken “decisive measures” to address the financial and economic crisis which shows “the Commission is leading the fight back against the crisis at the G20 level and at European level”. The Commission also states it proposed legislative texts that “put the single market firmly at the service of citizens … for instance through enhancing passenger rights in transport, cutting mobile phone charges or facilitating cross-border payments”. The list of this Commission's “achievements” does not end there and the document makes mention of the Globalisation Adjustment Fund, the Food Facility of €1 billion for developing countries, the European Institute of Technology, the €5 billion earmarked for financing energy projects and the installation of broad band in rural areas, as well as the European pact on immigration and asylum. It is due to the Commission that all these things have been possible, the report points out. “The EU is now taking the lead in shaping globalisation with European values and in promoting the European interest worldwide. Now is the time for the European citizens to express their views for the future in the EP elections”, Barroso concluded. (H.B./transl.jl)
