28/05/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 26 May, the Institute for an Open Society, published a study stating that ethnic and religious profiling was not only inefficient and discriminatory, it was also counter-productive when it came to preventing acts of terrorism. According to the study, ethnic profiling is more often a public relations exercise than a genuine response to crime. Set up by the billionaire philanthropist, George Soros, the NGO studied the use of notions of ethnicity and religion by the law enforcement agencies. The 200 page report describes general use of profiling in Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and other EU member states. Further information: (http: //http://www.justiceinitiative.org/ ).
