Parliament calls for immediate release of Roxana Saberi

Strasbourg, 08/05/2009 (Agence Europe) - In adopting a joint resolution brought by the EPP-ED, PES, ALDE, UEN, Greens/EFA and GUE/NGL groups in Strasbourg on Thursday 7 May, the European Parliament condemned the “unfounded sentence” handed down by the Iranian Revolutionary Court to Roxana Saberi on 18 April. Parliament expressed its deep concern as her health deteriorates. It called on the Appeal Court at its hearing on 12 May to release the Irano-American journalist “immediately and unconditionally”. MEPs also expressed their shock at the unfair trial and execution of Delara Darabi, and their consternation at the continuing executions of juvenile offenders, in complete disregard for international law and despite assurances given by the Iranian authorities that this inhuman practice would cease. They called on the Iranian authorities to honour their undertaking to put an end to the execution of juvenile offenders and to abolish stonings. (O.J./transl.rt)
