08/05/2009 (Agence Europe) - In Strasbourg on Thursday 7 May, the European Parliament adopted (by 379 votes to 15, with 11 abstentions) a resolution on the European Commission's draft regulation on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH). In this resolution, the Parliament calls on member states and the Commission to ensure the strict application of the European Parliament and Council directive on the protection of workers from risks of exposure to asbestos at work. It also calls on the Commission, by the end of 2009, to draft a legislative proposal on the controlled disposal of asbestos fibres and the decontamination or disposal of equipment containing asbestos fibres in order to eliminate them completely. It calls on the Commission to prepare a strategy for banning all forms of asbestos and all uses of asbestos fibres by 2015. (H.D./transl.rt)
