Brussels, 08/05/2009 (Agence Europe) - In a resolution adopted in Strasbourg on 7 May 2009, MEPs slammed serious violations of human rights and other illegal action by the Moldovan government against the opposition after the 5 April 2009 general elections in the country. The EP is calling for an investigation to be carried out into the deaths that occurred during these events. MEPs back the idea of stronger EU relations with Moldova through the ENP and the Eastern Partnership, but call for the EU to insist on progress on the rule of law and respect for human rights. The MEPs reject the claims by the Moldovan authorities that Romania orchestrated the protests when the election results were published. The EP points out that no serious evidence or sign had come to light that could lead to accusations that an EU member state was responsible for the violence in recent weeks. The MEPs criticise the expulsion of Romania's ambassador and call for the scrapping of visa obligations on Romanian citizens. The Council of the EU and the European Commission are urged to facilitate the EU's visa system for Moldova by easing the financial criteria. (H.B./transl.fl)
