A note to thank EP Vice-President Alejo Vidal-Quadras (EPP-ED, Spain) for ignoring calls by British Conservative MEP Edward McMillan-Scott and continuing to chair the two hours of votes on Thursday 23 April, clearly announcing the number of votes for and against (and abstentions) rather than simply saying “adopted” despite the record number of roll-call votes (which take place electronically at the EP). Unlike what McMillan-Scott and some EP vice-presidents seem to think, the chairing of the votes is extremely important for how the European Parliament operates and for ensuring that journalists and others on one-day visits (and officials explaining how the EP operates) actually understand what goes on at the place. Knowing exactly how many MEPs voted for or against or abstained from a vote, along with the whos, whys and wherefores, is crucial information about the work of the European Parliament and is also vital for the proper functioning of democracy. Other vice-presidents have also done a good job during this parliament - Gérard Onesta springs to mind - and older MEPs will remember the exemplary chairing of meetings by Nicole Fontaine and Nicole Péry.
