Chavez's growing authoritarianism worries Parliament

Strasbourg, 08/05/2009 (Agence Europe) - It was with the adoption of a resolution on Venezuela (29 votes to 1) that the European Parliament brought its sixth term of office to an end on Thursday 7 May. In the resolution brought by the EPP-ED, ALDE and UEN groups, Parliament expressed its profound concern at “the deterioration in the situation and in the quality of democracy in Venezuela, which is seriously threatened with collapse as a result of the concentration of power and the growing authoritarianism displayed by the president of the Republic”. It expresses its solidarity with all those suffering political persecution in Venezuela, a plight of which opposition leader Manuel Rosales has become the incarnation. It welcomes the decision taken by the Peruvian government to grant Rosales political asylum. (O.J./transl.rt)
