Brussels, 21/04/2009 (Agence Europe) - Commissioner Olli Rehn will be receiving the Croatian and Slovenian foreign ministers, Gordan Jandrokovic and Samuel Zbogar, on Wednesday 22 April in Brussels to seek to move forward towards a solution on the border dispute between the two countries, which has been blocking Croatia's membership talks for several months. Karel Schwarzenberg, the president-in-office of the EU Council, and representatives of the EU troika will also be present. On the basis of this meeting, the Czech EU Presidency is expected to decide whether the “accession conference” normally foreseen with Croatia on Friday 24 April, may effectively be held or not. On Monday, during a visit to Brussels, the Croatian minister for foreign affairs forwarded to Mr Rehn his country's response to the new (still secret) Commission proposal dated 25 March. It would seem that the proposal suggests setting up a five-judge arbitration panel responsible for ruling on the cross-border dispute (EUROPE 9882). In its response, Croatia is adamant there should be settlement of the border dispute before the international judicial body on the basis of international law. The Commission's objective is to settle the border dispute and bring Croatia's membership talks out of deadlock “as quickly as possible”, Mr Rehn told the press on Monday. (H.B./transl.jl)
