THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/euromed

21/04/2009 (Agence Europe) - Under friendly pressure from the EU and “moderate” Arab countries, the Palestinians may finally renounce the “empty chair” policy during the meeting of senior officials of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) in Brussels on 23 April. It is feared that non-attendance by the Palestinians could cause a similar reaction from other Arab countries (Syria and Lebanon in particular) at the risk of compromising re-launch of the Euro-Mediterranean process (EUROPE 9885). The hesitation shown by the Palestinians comes from the fact that being seated at the same table as the Israelis could constitute a bad sign for all those who wish to put pressure on the Netanyahu government. It would also be an internal error with elections in sight. On the other hand, bending to “friendly” requests, especially from Europeans, and taking part at the meeting could provide an argument in favour of Hamas. (F.B./transl.jl)
