Brussels, 21/04/2009 (Agence Europe) - In Prague on Tuesday 21 April, the EU troika, led by Karel Schwartzenberg, held a meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan and Chief Turkish Negotiator in accession talks Egemen Bagis. Carl Bildt, Foreign Minister of Sweden, which will next assume the rotating Presidency of the EU, and Commissioner Olli Rehn also took part in the meeting. The two sides discussed the state of progress in the accession negotiations (which are advancing but slowly: since talks began in October 2005, only 10 of the 35 chapters have been opened and of these only one has been provisionally closed), energy security and regional and international matters of moment (the Middle East peace process, the South Caucasus, Pakistan, and India). Bagis is expected in Paris on Wednesday 22 April for discussions with the French government. France openly opposes Turkey's accession to the EU. On Tuesday, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on the nationalists who won the legislative election in northern Cyprus not to cast doubt over talks on reunifying the island that are being held under the aegis of the UN. The leaders of the two Cypriot communities met once again on Tuesday for negotiations. (H.B./transl.rt)
