THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/belarus

06/04/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 6 April, the Council of Ministers of the EU adopted without discussion a common position implementing the decision of the Foreign Affairs Ministers of the EU to extend sanctions against Belarus, whilst confirming the suspension of some of them (EUROPE 9862). The restrictive measures targeting certain Belarusian civil servants are renewed until 15 March 2010, whereas travel bans on a number of the leaders of the country remain suspended until 15 December 2009 (as has been the case since October-November 2008). Monday's Council also adopted conclusions on the establishment of dialogue between the EU and Belarus on human rights. This dialogue will come under the framework of the troika and will take place at least once a year, to be hosted alternately by Belarus and the EU. (A.B./trans.fl)
