Briton to head Europol

Luxembourg, 06/04/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 6 April, the Home Affairs Ministers of the EU finally reached agreement on the name of the future director of Europol. It will be Britain's Rob Wainwright, 41, currently director the international division of the Serious Organised Crime Agency. He will take over at the helm of Europol for 4 years, replacing the current director, Max-Peter Ratzel of Germany, who will leave office in mid-April. The other applicant, the Hungarian Ferenc Banfi, 51, currently head of the EU's mission on the border between Moldova and Ukraine (EUBAM), withdrew his application after a secret ballot showed a strong majority in favour of his rival. Mr Wainwright, who then became the only candidate, was able to be elected unanimously. In return, it is likely that Mr Banfi will soon be promoted to the head of the European Police College (Cepol), according to a diplomat. The solution reached by the Czechs to avoid a drama is believed to owe much to Luc Frieden, the Luxembourg Justice Minister. (B.C./trans.fl)
