Parliament backs moves to bring EU and Minsk closer and makes specific proposals

Brussels, 15/01/2009 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament supports the policy of the EU's “gradual re-engagement” with Belarus, agreed at the Council meeting of 13 October 2008 (see EUROPE 9760) after Minsk took positive steps in human rights (release of the remaining political prisoners) and democratisation of the country (agreeing to international observers at elections, legalisation of the main opposition “For Freedom” movement and two independent newspapers).
