Brussels, 15/01/2009 (Agence Europe) - European Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs and Czech Energy Minister and Council President in office Martin Riman will take part in the summit in Moscow on Saturday alongside the heads of the Russian and Ukrainian governments Vladimir Putin and Julia Tymoshenko. The meeting was proposed by Russian President Dimitri Medvedev to try to resolve the gas dispute between the two countries which is affecting several EU member states. The European Commission and the Czech Presidency of the Council, on Wednesday, sent a letter to Russian and Ukrainian Energy Ministers Sergei Shmatko and Yuri Prodan calling for full and immediate resumption of the Russian gas flow to Europe. If this were not to happen, the credibility of the two countries as reliable partners would be “irrevocably affected” they said. The Commission and Presidency believe that Russia-Ukraine negotiations were long overdue, said Commission spokesman Johannes Laitenberger on Thursday 15 January. The EU was prepared to ask Riman and Piebalgs to attend the summit “on condition that the Russian and Ukrainian leaders were fully involved and had a mandate to find a lasting solution,” he added, warning that the talks planned must be an excuse for again delaying the resumption of supplies on this the ninth day of the conflict.
