Reintroduction of rebates to milk sector

Brussels, 15/01/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 15 January, Mariann Fischer Boel, Commissioner for Agriculture, announced that they would accept aid to milk producers experiencing difficulty caused by the “spectacular” fall in prices over recent months. Next week, the Commission will reintroduce rebates for butter and skimmed milk powder, as well as full-fat milk powder and cheese. Other measures as regards intervention, buying of butter and skimmed milk powder will resume in March; the Commission will, if necessary buy up more stock, pre-determined by normal calls for tender (30,000t limit on butter or the 109,000t limit on skimmed milk powder); in November 2008, the Commission reintroduced private butter storage, applicable from 1 January 2009, including that for December 2008's production.
