Strasbourg, 15/01/2009 (Agence Europe) - On their return from a brief visit to the Gaza Strip on Sunday 11 January, a delegation from the European Parliament expressed their indignation at the desolation reigning in the territory that has been the target of Israeli military strikes for over two weeks. Although their visit to Gaza was only very brief (an hour and a half), the eight MEPs (Luisa Morgantini, Hélène Flautre, Kyriacos Triantaphyllides, Chris Davies, David Hammerstein, Véronique De Keyser, Miguel Portas and Feleknas Uca) drew a black picture of the humanitarian situation for the people living there and condemned to remain there. “There is no safe place or time in Gaza”, Ms Flautre, French elected Greens representative who chairs the EP human rights committee, told the press on Wednesday 14 January. “Devastation and desolation” are the words used by Ms Morgantini, while Ms De Keyser spoke of “despair and anger”, speaking of a strong reaction and fear for the future also. In addition to the drama unfolding in Gaza, the Belgian Socialist says, “we shall have to bear the weight of the hatred engendered for many years to come”, while Mr Hammerstein expresses concern about the “serious political consequences of this conflict” for moderate Palestinian leaders.
