Brussels, 17/09/2008 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament's committee on civil liberties adopted a report on Monday 15 September by Italian MEP Roberta Angelilli (UEN) on protecting children using the internet (pornographic or violent content, risk of harassment). The EP is working in codecision on the proposal on a “Safer Internet plus” programme (2009-2013), adopted by the European Commission in February 2008 (EUROPE 9611). MEPs are in favour of the Commission proposal but have introduced a number of amendments, in particular concerning a number of new phenomena (electronic harassment and psychological manipulation of children) through the creation of a common “child safe” label for websites. They also want to facilitate the exchange of data between member states and advocate the creation of a European database, accessible by Europol, of images of sexual abuse of minors. The vote in plenary will take place in the second October session. The European Commission is to hold the Safer Internet Forum 2008 in Luxembourg on 25-26 September. (B.C./transl.fl)
