09/06/2008 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament has, with a few adjustments, given first reading approval (co-decision procedure) to the proposal for a directive updating regulation on the prohibition on the use of certain substances which have a hormonal or thyreostatic action and of beta-agonists on farmed animals (see EUROPE 9439). The compromise amendment, which forms part of the report by Karin Scheele adopted by the EP by 629 votes to 2 with 11 abstentions, provides for information and awareness-raising campaigns (for farmers and vets notably) on the complete ban on the use of oestradiol 17 â in food-producing animals. Member states will have to bring into force the laws, regulations and administrative provisions necessary to comply with this directive by 1 January 2009 at the latest, according to the EP. (L.C./transl. rt)
