19/05/2008 (Agence Europe) - The role of active citizenship in the creation of links between different relations was at the heart of the third Brussels debate on 14 May, which forms part of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue. The “New Horizons: active citizenship to bridge inter-religious divides” was prepared by the European Commission and the European Policy Centre. Participants included, the EU for education, culture, youth and sport, Jan Figel and the European Parliament vice president, Mario Mauro. Europe is built around a dynamic mixture of people of different faiths, culture and traditions, with positive and enriching fusions between the communities. European history, however, has also been punctuated by religious conflicts, including conflicts involving those from the same faith and there are still certain tensions and discrimination in some communities. Nadine Iarchy, vice president of the International Council of Jewish Women and Imam Abduljalil Sajid, the president of the Muslim Council for Racial and Religious Harmony in the United Kingdom, helped to clarify these issues.
