Brussels, 19/05/2008 (Agence Europe) - The new Italian Foreign Affairs Minister Franco Frattini has declared himself in favour of a revision of the Schengen convention, as Europe's problem “is no longer free movement” of people but “security”. “A revision is necessary to verify the adequacy (of the treaty) in view of the internal and external borders”, the former European Commissioner for immigration said in an interview with Il Messaggero published on Friday 16 May. “An ongoing inspection of the external borders is necessary as well as surprise inspections by the European Commission. If subsequently fingerprints are introduced to the Schengen 2 (SIS II) database in 2009, everything will be much easier”, Mr Frattini explained. However, through its spokesperson Pietro Petrucci, the European Commission has told Rome that it has no intention of modifying the Schengen agreement, which abolished border controls between the signatory states.
