Brussels, 08/04/2008 (Agence Europe) - Commissioner Jan Figel, responsible for education, training, culture, youth and sports took part in a special Belgian public TV programme on Saturday night at the premises of RTBF. The programme focused on Arab children in European countries and posed the question of their assimilation and integration. This programme was presented by the Qatar based “Al Jazeera Children's Channel”, which provides educational programmes and entertainment to children in Arab countries and Europe, as part of its weekly “Nadhra Ala…” (A look at…) programme that is broadcast live from Brussels, with live links in Marseilles and London. Around 40 immigrant children were present and were able to discuss and exchange experiences on issues such as obstacles to the integration of children, cultural duality or loss of identity. The programme - a compilation of children's experiences edited with reports - enabled these second or third generation immigrant children to share their daily lives with children living in Arab countries, thanks to interpretations in Arabic, English and French. Jan Figel said: “We have to remember that 2008 is the European Year of Cultural Dialogue. I think we have to use all the different events provided to us to improve dialogue. (I.L.)
