On 19 March 1958, the inaugural meeting of the Assembly of the European Communities was held in Strasbourg. Its first chairman, Robert Schuman, was elected by acclamation. With this event, which takes us back to its origins, the European Parliament celebrates its fiftieth anniversary this year.
