Newspapers remain essential source of information

Brussels, 07/12/2007 (Agence Europe) - At the European Parliament on Wednesday evening, the European Newspaper Publishers' Association (ENPA) launched the 2007 edition of its study “Europeans Read Newspapers”, in the presence of the European Commissioner Viviane Reding and the MEP Ruth Hieronymi (EPP-ED, Germany). This study was published for the first time in 1996, and draws a detailed portrait of the readership of the press in 18 European countries. Although newspapers continue to be read on a daily basis by the vast majority of citizens, the landscape of the press has nonetheless changed over 10 years. Firstly, the online publishing of newspapers has exploded and editorial sites are among those most frequently visited by Internet users. Secondly, the technical evolution has helped paper publishing to improve, with a more practical format and more attractive presentation, continuing to enjoy a faithful readership. The success of newspapers has continued thanks to content which remains close to the readers, said Alvin Sold, a Luxembourg newspaper editor and honorary president of the ENPA. The concerns of the newspaper publishers have not changed in 10 years: reduction in rates of VAT, copyright protection, press freedom, the plurality and diversity of the media, and relaxing rules on advertising.
