Agreement with Faroe Islands on 2008 fishing possibilities

Brussels, 07/12/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 5 December, the EU and the Faroe Islands reached agreement on the levels of next year's fishing possibilities in each other's waters. In line with scientific opinion, the EU and Faroe agreed to keep current levels for several species (cod, haddock, mackerel, herring, horse mackerel, sprat etc.) unchanged in 2008. A number of fishing possibilities for EU vessels in Faroese waters have, however, been reduced: 1,600 tonnes (t) of redfish in 2008, compared with 2,265t in 2007; 2,425t of saithe, compared with 2,700t in 2007. There was even a 32% reduction in blue whiting (12,240t for Community vessels in 2008, compared with a quota of 18,000t in 2007). The quota for blue whiting for Faroese vessels fishing in Community waters was also reduced by 32% (from 43,500t in 2007 to 29,580t in 2008). Denmark, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany and France are the main beneficiaries of this annual agreement with the Faroe Islands. (L.C.)
