Brussels, 15/11/2007 (Agence Europe) - With a few days to go till the Bali conference, finance ministers from the European Union and European Free Trade Association (EFTA: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland) held discussions on Tuesday 13 November on the future fight against climate change. Speaking on behalf of EFTA, the Swiss federal minister, Doris Leuthard, indicated that she saw four elements to take into account for negotiations on the implementation of an international post-Kyoto protocol: “First, climate change is a global problem and has to be solved on a global scale. Second, to fight climate change globally, we need flexible mechanisms and in the long term a global cap-and-trade system. Third, technology transfer is an essential factor to avoid in due time the unchecked growth of emissions in developing countries. Fourth, to achieve technology transfer, we have to work on the credibility and the effectiveness of the flexible mechanisms, and we should discuss the supplementary rule”. (M.B.)
