Brussels, 09/11/2007 (Agence Europe) - Participants in the Kimberley Process meeting in Brussels for their annual conference on Thursday 8 November (see EUROPE 9535) decided to launch an initiative to address the issue of rough diamonds from Côte d'Ivoire, and to re-admit the Republic of Congo (Brazzaville) to the Process, the international system set up in 21000 to prevent blood diamonds from entering international markets. The Côte d'Ivoire initiative, working with the country itself and its neighbours and in close cooperation with the United Nations, will identify ways to improve the control and monitoring of rough diamonds. The progress made by Latin America and the considerable effort made by Ghana in 2007 to enhance the credibility of its internal controls were recognised and delegates' appreciation was shown. The plenary session also acknowledged the efforts of the EU's outgoing chairmanship to improve the implementation and transparency of the Kimberley Process, through publication of statistics on diamond production and trade. In January 2008, India will take over the chairmanship. (A.N.)
