THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/fyrom

31/10/2007 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission is expected to suggest to its member states that they do not yet launch accession negotiations with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) because of enduring political problems, particularly tension between the Macedonian majority and the Albanian-speaking minority in the country. This at least will be the Commission's recommendation, according to Reuters and the Macedonian newspaper Dnevik, in the assessment report to be adopted by the College of Commissioners on 6 November. The Commission did not deny the reports but would not confirm them either, suggesting waiting for the publication of the report. November 6 will also see the adoption of other reports on the two other candidate countries (Croatia and Turkey) and potential candidate countries (Albania, Bosnia Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia). As during the most recent round of evaluation, combatting organised crime and corruption remain the most problematic issues raised in the reports (see EUROPE 9302). (A.B.)
