EU steps up efforts to promote “fair globalisation”

Brussels, 31/10/2007 (Agence Europe) - At the ILO forum on “Decent Work for a Fair Globalisation”, which will be held from 31 October- 2 November in Lisbon, the European Commissioner for Social Affairs, Vladimir Spidla, announced that the EU would be stepping up its efforts in favour of decent work. In particular, according to a press release, the Commission will: - favour closer cooperation and increased strategic coherence between international bodies such as the WTO, the international financial organisations, the United Nations and the ILO; - intensify its dialogue with the emerging economies regarding employment and social affairs; - present, in 2008, an inventory of its current and future initiatives for decent work in the fields of employment and social affairs, development, trade and external relations; - urge the member states of the EU to ratify a series of updated ILO conventions on decent work.
