Brussels, 31/10/2007 (Agence Europe) - Israel's decision to reduce the supply of fuel to Gaza is concerning the EU. In a press release published on 30 October, the Portuguese presidency recognises Israel's legitimate right to self defence and condemns the attacks carried out in Israel, but highlights the need “for carefully weighing the negative impact of such measures on a civilian population already living under very difficult conditions”. It re-states that the EU will not abandon the Palestinian population. On Monday 29 October, External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner, visiting the region, criticised the restrictions that have been in place since Sunday. In response to a rocket fired from Palestinian territory, Israel imposed a reduction in fuel deliveries to the Gaza Strip. While visiting Jerusalem, Ferrero-Waldner said she was “very concerned” by the decision. “Collective punishment is never a solution,” she went on. The Israeli decision has also been deemed “unacceptable” by UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon. (A.B.)
