Piebalgs/Khristenko meeting on 16 October - Adoption of eighth energy dialogue progress report

Brussels, 15/10/2007 (Agence Europe) - Ahead of the EU/Russia Summit, to be held on 26 October in Mafra, the European Commissioner for Energy, Andris Piebalgs, is to meet the Russian energy Minister, Viktor Khristenko, in Brussels this Tuesday 16 October, within the framework of EU/Russian energy dialogue. Mr Piebalgs and Mr Khristenko will carry out an evaluation of the current situation and prospects for EU/Russia energy cooperation, and will hold exchanges of views on the development of energy infrastructure, and on the most recent developments in terms of legislation on the Russian and European markets. The recent proposals of the Commission within the framework of its third legislative package for the liberalisation of the internal gas and electricity market (and its clause aiming to limit investments made by third-country operators in the EU energy sector) will no doubt be the focus of discussions. Mr Piebalgs and Mr Khristenko are also set to discuss the results of the meetings of various joint thematic working groups, created as part of restructured energy dialogue (the working groups will now discuss energy forecasts and scenarios, developments on the European and Russian markets and energy efficiency) and to adopt the eighth progress report on EU/Russian energy dialogue. Lastly, they will discuss the details of the early detection mechanism for interruptions to supply (for an overview of the main elements of the mechanism, see EUROPE 9417) and the state of play with the feasibility study for inter-connection between the European UCTE electricity systems with the post-Soviet IPS/UPS ones.
