Benita Ferrero-Waldner to visit Kaliningrad

Brussels, 11/10/2007 (Agence Europe) - EU External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner is visiting Kaliningrad on Thursday 11 and Friday 12 October. During her visit, she will meet with Sergey Yastrzhembsky, an aide to the Russian president, Governor Georgy Boos, and Regional Development Minister Dmitri Kozak to discuss Kaliningrad's development prospects and further EU aid, including improvements to Kaliningrad border crossings. In a press release issued by the commissioner, Ferrero-Waldner explains: 'With trade growing, we now have to make sure that both infrastructure and functioning of border crossings respond to modern requirements.' €132 million has been earmarked for cross-border cooperation programmes in the region (Kaliningrad, Poland and Lithuania) in 2007-2013. An estimated €60-90 million will go to various projects in Kaliningrad (energy saving projects for companies and public buildings, waste water management in Kaliningrad and Gusev, monitoring oil spills in the Baltic Sea, and programmes to combat drug addiction, HIV/AIDs and tuberculosis).
