Brussels, 20/09/2007 (Agence Europe) - The EU is concerned about the Israeli government's declaration that the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip is a “hostile entity”. This decision, taken on 19 September in response to the continued rocket attacks by Palestinian militants, means that fuel and electricity supplies could be cut off from the Gaza Strip. Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the CFSP, said their first reaction was one of great concern as they believe the people of Gaza should not be deprived of essentials. Together with the UN secretary general, he called on the Israeli government to “reconsider its decision”. The Commission also trusts that “Israel will not use the instruments for which it set the framework on 19 September”, the spokeswoman for Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner said. (hb)
